Below are some of our most frequently asked questions. If you can’t see what you’re looking for, please call 0161 763 7074 to speak to one of our technical advisers who will be more than happy to help you.
The ProPERLA range of exterior coatings have been designed to be highly breathable to ensure that they do not interfere with a substrate’s natural ability to ‘breathe’ even after coating.
Unlike some stone and brick sealing products, it does not block the pores of the masonry by coating them with a thin film.
Water vapour permeability testing was conducted in accordance with BS EN ISO 7783:2011 and it demonstrated that the coating had little effect on the water vapour diffusion of the substrate.
As moisture is naturally drawn to the surface of the brick or substrate, ProPERLA coatings allow the water molecules to pass through and release into the air – avoiding complications of trapped water and moisture which will ultimately lead to damp problems.
‘Breathability’ is a term used within the building industry to describe how a substrate allows water molecules and air molecules to pass through it. Breathability ratings are identified by an ‘SD’ value –both ProPERLA Masonry Crème and ProPERLA Water Repellent have an SD value of 0.00, whilst ProPERLA Exterior Façade Coating (Colours) has a rating of 0.06. These figures show that the products are at the top end of breathability ratings.
All the ProPERLA products have been tested to conform to BS-EN ISO 15148 to show a reduction in thermal conductivity through all absorbent buildings surfaces.
ProPERLA wall coatings have been rigorously tested and certified by the UKAS accredited testing laboratory, Lucideon (No. 0013), to give you peace of mind.
Lucideon is an independent materials testing and analysis laboratory. Using their state-of-the-art facilities and scientific expertise, Lucideon can thoroughly test product performance and provide impartial results.
ProPERLA wall coatings have been tested for durability, thermal insulating properties, breathability and water repellency.
It varies on different substrates but generally have a spreading rate of approximately 4-5m² per litre. Specific details about the coverage of each of the products can be found on the Datasheet which can be downloaded on the product page.
Yes – you can apply ProPERLA Exterior Façade Coating over previously painted surfaces. ProPERLA Masonry Crème and ProPERLA Water Repellent can however, only be applied onto untreated absorbent surfaces.
Yes they do – the products bond with the substrate and will prevent further damage or surface breakdown.
ProPERLA products are applied predominantly by airless spray after appropriate cleaning and preparation of the relevant surfaces. They may also be applied with a paint roller. Specific details about how to prepare the surface and how to apply the products can be found on the Datasheet which can be downloaded on the product page.
Having this highly technical and sophisticated coating system applied by a professional, trained applicator will ensure that all the necessary pre-application preparation and remedial work is undertaken before any product is applied. This will ensure that the coating system performs to the best of its abilities and the 20 year manufacturer’s guarantee is safeguarded.
There are also other benefits of professional application :
ProPERLA cannot be applied in temperatures less than 5°C.
ProPERLA Masonry crème and ProPERLA Water Repellent are one- coat applications. ProPERLA Exterior Façade Coating (Colours) is a two coat application.
ProPERLA Masonry crème and ProPERLA Water Repellent dries completely natural and does not affect the external appearance of the building. ProPERLA Façade Coating (Colours) dries with a matt finish.
Coating the external walls of your property with ProPERLA will stop any further water ingress and will allow any contained moisture to evaporate naturally.
Once the surface is completely dry, which depends on the air temperature at the time.
ProPERLA Exterior Façade Coating can be applied over Pebbledash.
Although the ProPERLA range of coatings has been designed for external use, there is no reason why they could not be used on interior walls.
This is very much dependent on the air temperature at the time of application. At 20° C ProPERLA Exterior Façade Coating is touch dry after 30 minutes and will require its second coat after about 6 hours. If it is applied at a temperature under 10° C it will not be touch dry for 3-4 hours.
ProPERLA Masonry Crème is a clear product which penetrates the substrate of the building and as such does not affect the appearance of the walls. ProPERLA Water Repellent also does not alter the appearance of the substrate. ProPERLA Exterior Façade Coating does however change the appearance to reflect the colour of your choice.
This obviously depends on the environmental conditions at the time of application, but generally it would be typical to see results for ProPERLA Masonry Crème after approximately 2 hours, this is the same for ProPERLA Water Repellent. The Exterior Façade Coating can take up to 2-3 weeks in colder conditions to fully show the beading effect of the coating.
The ProPERLA range of exterior coating products are highly technical, advanced, exterior coating systems.
By creating a dry building envelope. Porous building materials normally have good insulating properties as they have air filled cavities, which offer low thermal conductivity – but only when they are dry. Damp walls act as thermal bridges. If the pores of a wall collect moisture, more heat is transferred through them than would be possible if the cavities were filled with air. The thermal conductivity of a wall decreases significantly with dampness. Tests have shown that a damp content of just 5% in a plain brick wall can lower its insulation performance by up to 50%, especially where cavity wall insulation has been installed. Buildings coated with ProPERLA products – which create super hydrophobic surfaces – will remain dry – and dry walls mean less money is spent on energy to keep the building warm.
These houses ‘move’ quite a bit throughout the seasons. All properties move whether it is through structural or thermal movement. ProPERLA systems bond in such a way that it moves with the building.
There are no ProPERLA products suitable for metal surfaces as yet but there is a new ProPERLA clear wood treatment now available with a 10 year manufacturer’s guarantee. If you are interested in ProPERLA Clear Wood treatment please get in touch and one of our technical advisers will be happy to provide further information on this product – contact us via email (email@example.com) or phone (0161 763 7074).
Due to its super hydrophobic properties, surfaces coated with ProPERLA mimic the lotus leaf. This means they repel dirt and water and as such they are self-cleaning.
Part of the preparation process prior to coating includes the application of ProPERLA cleaner to ensure the coating is given the best possible surface to adhere to.
If the colour is from the same batch then it should be okay.
