Super Hydrophobic

A surface is considered super hydrophobic if a water droplet beads up (with a contact angle greater than 150° and the droplets can slide away from the surface readily (it has a small contact angle hysteresis). Super hydrophobic surfaces repel water, causing it to form beads because it is more attracted to itself than the surface. This means water will run off the surface making it extremely difficult to wet.

This is known as the ‘lotus effect’ due to its similarity to the lotus leaf but is also seen on duck feathers and butterfly wings.

Mineral surfaces like roof tiles which have been coated with ProPERLA Water Repellent will respond in the same way – water will form droplets and won’t penetrate the substrate.

There is no restriction on the ability of the building or roof of the property to allow air and moisture to escape and breathe out. ProPERLA Water Repellent benefits from an SD (breathability rating) of 0.03. A coating is considered to be breathable if it has an SD value of 0.50.

A breathing roof will improve its insulation properties. Just a 5% content of damp in building materials can lower the thermal resistance by up to 50%.

Keep the property clean and attractive

The superior technology mimics the ‘lotus-leaf’, repelling dirt and water to give a super hydrophobic effect, making walls/roof tiles self-cleaning.

  • Dirt particles are unable to obtain a hold on ProPERLA treated surfaces and will simply flow off with rainfall.
  • Helps to prevent discolouration and salt efflorescence
  • Makes it difficult for the growth of moss, algae or lichens
  • Slows the ageing or breakdown of the surface of the building or its tiles

The masonry and tiles remain clean and attractive, even where they are exposed to extreme weather conditions including shade, high air humidity or sea salt penetrated air. ProPERLA Water Repellent is completely unaffected by UV rays.

Proven Performance

ProPERLA Water Repellent is weather resistant in accordance VOB – meaning the products can withstand all climatic conditions

ProPERLA Water Repellent is manufactured in accordance with DIN 4108 – European rating for water repellency

ProPERLA Water Repellent has been tested and certified in accordance with EN1504-2 : 2005, confirming depth of penetration, water absorption, resistance to alkali, drying rate and thermal conductivity

ProPERLA Water Repellent is a one-coat system.

Surfaces less than one year old may be coated with minimal preparation.

Older surfaces must first be cleaned thoroughly with a pressure washer before treatment and prepared with ProPERLA cleaner.

Full instructions on how to apply ProPERLA Water Repellent can be found in the Datasheet, available to download above.
