Roof Spraying

Roof Spraying

What Is Roof Spraying?

Roof spraying is the process of applying a protective roof treatment to roof tiles, in order provide the roof with added protection against weathering, while also adding a new and attractive look to the roof.

Why Spray A Roof?

Contrary to popular belief, mineral building materials such as roof tiles are porous, meaning they absorb moisture. The more porous a surface, the moisture can enter the material.

Moisture is the single biggest cause of building material deterioration. In the case of roof tiles, when temperatures drop below freezing, any moisture that is present within the tiles will undergo a freeze-thaw cycle. This freeze-thaw cycle causes the moisture expand as it turns to a solid, causing cracks in the roof tile to open up under the movement. These cracks further compromise the ability for the roof tile to keep water out, leading to further damage.

Moisture can also create the ideal environment for moss, lichens & other green growth to develop on & in-between roof tiles, which is a common sight for many homeowners across the UK.

While moss can be an aesthetic problems for properties, there are more damaging problems caused by moss that are less visible. By growing in the gaps between roof tiles, moss can compromise the ability for your roof to keep out moisture. If moss is allowed to grow on your roof long-term, the rainwater that the moss will absorb can cause roof tiles to rot due to the consistent exposure to high levels of moisture. Furthermore, the growth of the moss will fill the gaps between the roof tiles, which can move & damage the roof tiles

This is where spraying a roof comes in. By applying a protective coating to the roof tiles, you help to ensure that moisture cannot absorb into the roof tiles. This adds additional weather protection to the roof tiles, helping to extend their lifespan and preventing the need for a roof replacement, which can often be unnecessary.

What Products Do You Spray?

When it comes to spraying roofs, there are two options. You can either apply a clear treatment or a coloured paint.

Here at ProPERLA UK we have developed the most advanced exterior coatings in the UK that contain our super hydrophobic nano-technology. This technology creates a water repellent surface on the roof tiles that prevents up to 96.3% of water absorption. This is caused when water droplets are unable to stick to the treated roof tile, causing it to simply form beads on the surface.

While preventing water absorption, the technology remains highly breathable. Breathability refers to the ability for water vapour to travel through a surface. If surface is not breathable, any moisture from inside the material will become trapped as it cannot freely breathe out. Over time, this build up of moisture will cause significant damage to the material and any coating applied to it will fail.

By preventing water absorption while remaining highly breathable, the roof tiles treated with super hydrophobic stay dry, helping to prevent damage and keeping them looking clean by preventing moss growth.

Our clear ProPERLA Water Repellent is a completely invisible waterproof treatment for roof tiles that penetrates deep into the roof tile. This maintains the natural beauty of the roof tile, while still providing waterproof protection.

Our RENOTEC Roof Coating is a coloured roof coating that can completely transform a roof. As a paint, it works on the surface of the roof tile, however unlike 'sealers' that form a non-breathable film on the surface of roof tiles, the roof coating lines the pores of the tile without sealing these pores. This maintains breathability and provides a long-lasting, attractive finish.

Both products have undergone independent testing by UKAS accredited laboratory Lucideon, which found that after 25 years accelerated weathering, both treatments showed no signs of deterioration in appearance or performance. This makes ProPERLA Water Repellent & RENOTEC Roof Coating the most durable and advanced roof treatments available in the UK today.

How Are Roof Sprayed?

Step 1: Cleaning

The first step of applying any protective paint or coating is to ensure the surface is clean. Removing any moss, green growth and other containments is crucial for achieving long-lasting results.

Modern methods of cleaning do not damage roof tiles, which is what has occurred over the years with strong pressure washing of roofs before treating.

When the large containments are removed, a fungicidal cleaner is applied to the roof to prevent any fungal growth from growing on the roof once treated. If fungal growth is left untreated, there is a risk it could continue to bloom on the roof tiles.

Once the roof is clean, it is left to completely dry before spraying.

Step 2: Spraying

Once cleaned, the roof treatments are then applied. RENOTEC Roof Coating as a coloured paint is applied using a spray machine such as an airless spray machine or a HVLP. This is used in order to achieve a perfectly smooth, uniform finish across the roof.

ProPERLA Water Repellent as a clear treatment does not have to be applied using a spray machine. This is because it is an impregnating system that penetrates into the roof tiles. This means that it does not need to be applied to achieve a neat finish and simply needs to be applied evenly. For this reason, a hand-pump sprayer can be used to apply the treatment.

ProPERLA products contain a specialist technology that must be applied by experts in order to ensure they perform to their maximum performance of over 25 years. Furthermore, due to the safety requirements of treating and cleaning a roof, it is recommended that you seek the help of an expert.

We have a number of approved ProPERLA applicators up and down the UK who have attended our rigorous training program to ensure they apply our products to the highest level. To find an approved ProPERLA applicator, simply type your postcode in our applicator finder tool and find your nearest applicator, who can paint your roof & protect it for decades to come.

ProPERLA approved applicators, as they have attended our training course, can issue manufacturer guarantees on behalf of us to homeowners, ensuring the performance of their newly painted roof for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How do I become an approved applicator of ProPERLA products?

To ensure our products are only applied by trained experts, we ensure that applicators attend our training course in order to become an approved applicator of ProPERLA products. Why not read more about our training course if you would like to be able to offer ProPERLA technology to your clients?

Q. What is the water absorption difference between a non treated roof tile & a treated one?

As roof tiles are applied to roofs to keep the weather out, we assume that they are completely waterproof. The reality is, they are porous and will uptake moisture. In the image below you can see a roof tile that has half treated with ProPERLA and half left untreated. With the treated side you can see how the surface repels the water, while the water has soaked through into the roof tile on the untreated side.

Q. What colours are available?

RENTOEC Roof Coating comes in a number of colours that can completely transform your roof, from classic mid-brown shades to a modern black blue.

Before & Afters

Want to see what a roof looks like once sprayed using ProPERLA products? Here are a couple of images showing recent projects using ProPERLA Water Repellent & RENOTEC Roof Coating.

In the case of ProPERLA Water Repellent, it is ideal if you do not want to achieve a completely uniform finish to the roof. It particularly suits older properties where some of the natural weathering of the roof tiles is desirable. These properties are generally susceptible to moss growth, which is where applying an invisible protective treatment is ideal.

RENOTEC Roof Coating is perfect if you want to make a real impact on the kerb appeal of your home. Whether you opt for a modern black blue colour, or a more natural brown shade, it can completely transform the look of the property.
